Dr. Susan Cooke will examine the golden era in Chinese contemporary art after the death of Chairman Mao in China. Due to artistic suppression during the cultural revolution, artists began to assert their creative freedom when Deng Xiaoping came to power. Starting with the Star’s Group in Beijing, China experienced many artistic movements which led to the emergence of the booming art market in recent years. The demand for Chinese contemporary art continues to soar resulting in record breaking sales for many Chinese artists.
